How to connect to WordPress using sFTP on CentOS

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the most common method of transferring files to a WordPress account, although it transmits all data in plain text. This could enable a third party to obtain your login credentials simply by monitoring, or sniffing, the network. SSH FTP, or SFTP, provides a more secure connection by encrypting the data before transmitting it over a network. This process requires both the WordPress installation and the FTP client to support SFTP. Once the FTP client is installed, you can connect to a WordPress account by providing the client with the proper parameters.

Here is one approach to connect to a self-hosted WordPress install using SFTP.

Install the FTP client

This example uses Filezilla, a popular FTP client for Linux-based operating systems such as CentOS.

Download the appropriate tar file for Filezilla using a wget command similar to the following:

$ wget sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/files/FileZilla_Client/3.9.0.6/FileZilla_3.9.0.6_x86_64-linux-gnu.tar.bz2

Extract the individual files from the above tar file with this command:

$ tar -xjvf FileZilla_3.9.0.6_x86_64-linux-gnu.tar.bz2

Remove any existing files from the /opt/filezilla folders:

$ sudo rm -rf /opt/filezilla*

Move the FileZilla3 files that you previously extracted to the /opt/filezilla folder:

$ sudo mv FileZilla3 /opt/filezilla3

Create a symbolic link between the /bin/filezilla folders:

$ sudo ln -sf /opt/filezilla3/bin/filezilla /usr/bin/filezilla

Start Filezilla with the filezilla command.

Connect to the WordPress account with Filezilla

Click the icon under the File menu item to display the site manager. Click on the New Site button to create a new connection and label it something like SFTP Site. Enter the IP address or the URL for your WordPress host, which is localhost for this example. Enter the host's port number for SFTP connections, which is 22 by default. Select SFTP as the protocol and then select a normal logon type for most WordPress hosts. Enter your user name (testuser for this example) and its password for the host.

Click on the Advanced tab. Enter the name of your WordPress directory on the host, which is /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-admin for this example.

Click the Connect button, and wait for Filezilla to connect to your WordPress host.

Note the contents of your WordPress directory in the Remote Site window.
