Personalize my home page

Your home page is the first place most visitors land. Is it clear who you are and what you offer? Is your business name and contact information easy to find? Do you have a clear next step, or call to action (CTA), for your customers to take?

Goals for this section:

  • Set business name and contact information.
  • Get clarity on who you are, what you do, and what to do next.
  • Add optional sections.

Estimated time to complete: 15-30 minutes

Business name and contact information

First, let’s check your contact information. That way when we add contact sections or map sections, everything is already populated.

Open your site from your My Products page, then select Edit Website to open your website editor.

Let's go into Settings, then select Basic Information.

Review your Site Name, Business Category, Email, Address and Phone Number. If you’ve made any changes, select Done.

Later when you make your website easy to find and connect your social media, make sure your business name, address, and phone number exactly match. Search engines prefer businesses with consistent contact information and show them higher in search results.

Changing your site profile, Lesson 3 from the Adding Advanced Functionality in Website Builder How-To course, walks you through the steps.

Get clarity on who you are, what you do, and what to do next

Your home page needs three basic things: who you are, what you do, and how to contact you (or what to do next).

Select Website.

From your home page, select the header. You want who you are, what you do, and how to contact you (or what to do next) to be completely contained in the first section of your site. Always write to your customer’s point of view. If you need a refresher, our How-To course on Marketing Basics includes creating a customer persona.

First, update your header image (or header video on some themes) to represent your business. If you’re a plumber in Seattle, show pipes being fixed, wrenches, or a faucet or drain. Showing a scenic image of the Space Needle doesn’t help us know who you are and what you do.

Select Cover Media, and then select Change image. Upload your own photo or use one of our royalty-free stock images. When you're finished editing your image or video and alt text, select Done.

Next, let's update the text. Your header should contain the elements of an effective small business website home page. Use your promise or solution as your Headline, and then add your sub-promise or a few sentences about your business to the Paragraph.

Finally, use a strong verb on your Action button telling people how to contact you (or what to do). Then direct the action button link to a specific place on your website or to another URL (like a social media page).

Lesson 3 of the Build Your Own Website How-To course goes over these details.

Optional sections

The header section is where you have the ability to add a promotional banner to the top of your site. If you don’t have breaking news or a theme with your contact information, use the banner to add your phone or address.

Two other things you can add are website messaging and a pop-up box. Select Website again, and you’ll see two website add-on options at the bottom of your sections list: Messaging and Pop-up. If you add website messaging, it gives people another way to send you an email. You might add a pop-up box if you have an important announcement and need to get people’s attention.

Your home page will have some other sections already added as part of your template, or you can add your own sections. Later, you can add pages, and move home page sections to the new pages.

For example, you might have a Contact Us form or a location map. Or you might have a photo gallery showing off your business or customers. Edit these sections, move them or delete them. Make sure every section on your page supports who you are, what you do and what to do next.

Lesson 16 of Build Your Own Website How-To course, walks you through a sample home page from top to bottom, with examples of sections you can add.

Summary

Your home page is set and it’s clear who you are, what you do, and how to contact you (or what to do next). Next, let’s customize the rest of your content—both text and images.
